The Infestation Continues!

The infestation rambles on, and many thanks go out to Shawn Cousineau.  Rogue’s Gallery has graciously agreed to support the cause by carrying issue #0 of The Underground.  For those who don’t know, issue #0 “Unearthed” was produced as a part of The Small Pres Idol 2009.  The book features highlights from the contest, judges comments, and exclusive bonus material.  Supply is limited, so head on in as soon as you can, they’re sure to be an unforgettable collector’s item.

As a friendly reminder, it should be noted that Paul cannot count.  The sequence of books in The Underground series is; #1, #0, and then #2.  Copies of issue #1 “Harvest” are still available through Paul or Dave, and #2 is being released page by page as a webcomic as we work towards our print production.

Well that’s it bugs, and grubs.  Thanks again to Shawn and the crew at Rogue’s Gallery.  We’ve included their contact info at the bottom of this article.  Take a moment, pop in, say hi, and support your friendly neighbourhood artists.

A new menace for The Underground

by preaume on September 8, 2013 at 10:43 PM
Posted In: Uncategorized

“While at Hugin & Munin this year for Free Comic Book Day, I started work on the cover for Bad Seeds.  As many of you have seen, it’s a tribute to the classic cover for Days of Future Past.  I drew a bunch of  “WANTED” posters on the wall, and began filling them in with members of The Hive, and specifically the Shock Troops.  As I did this though, we found that we had one extra space…and with that simple opportunity, the character Quinn was born”

-Paul Reaume

Quinn

An enigma wrapped in a shroud of mystery, Quinn is the ultimate weapon of the hive. Every generation of larva has one selected by Baron Tarq to be Quinn and rightly trained in the assassin’s dark arts. Well schooled and extremely quick, he is easily able to infiltrate any fortification with silence and deadly efficiency. He is Tarq’s fist as well as his scalpel, attacking ferociously with paired axes and stings when needed His mask obscures any glimpse of his true face but rest assured that where that mask is seen, death will surely follow.

Our First Mini-Novel!

by preaume on September 5, 2013 at 9:13 AM
Posted In: Uncategorized

We’re really excited to announce the release of our very first Mini-Novel!  ‘Tragic Loss’ was the first short story Underground writer Dave Rocha wrote for the series’ background.  Appropriately enough, we’ve chosen it to be our first mini-novel for sale.

The story focuses on Styx, leader of the Zealot’s Elite, and also introduces the Termite Union.

“This story was an incredible learning experience for me as it’s the first time that I’ve written a unique story set in someone else’s universe. It was so much fun to write that I couldn’t stop at times. Styx is such a complex character behind all that bravado. I had to give readers a glimpse of that. More is coming, stay tuned for the twisted buginess.”

-Dave Rocha
Underground writer

The Tragic Loss mini-novel is available now for $2. The mini-novel features a coloured cover, and eighteen pages of printed story.  As an added bonus, there are two pages of previously unreleased concept art, and insight from artist Paul Reaume.   Profits from this initiative will be directed towards the production of the next installment in The Underground series, ‘Bad Seeds’.

The Underground: Bad Seeds Cover art

by preaume on May 19, 2013 at 10:21 AM

Not just another cover!

The cover for The Underground “Bad Seeds” was the hardest one for me to come up with.  I’ve never had difficulty coming up with a cover design, but for whatever reason, I just couldn’t nail the impact that I was going for.  I wanted something special.  Something that would get people talking a bit, something that would make you want to show your friends, something that would encourage you to pick the book up off the shelf.  But then I remembered one of the judges’ comments from the Small Press Idol 2009.

“Making the leap into empathy in movies like A Bug’s Life and Antz is achieved by making them very ‘human’, cute, and loading the proceedings with humor adn pop culture references.”
-SAM

Pop culture references, eh?

There was the answer!  For this, and upcoming covers, we’ve decided to make visual parodies of some of the most iconic comic covers in history.  With a title like ‘Bad Seeds’, and with the extra attention paid to the evil Shock Troops, I had toyed around with the idea of making a wanted poster.  There’s only one iconic cover that fits the bill, when thinking of wanted posters…

The Unveiling!

While sitting at Hugin & Munin for Free Comic Book Day I looked at Dave and said, “Today I’m drawing The Bad Seeds Cover”.

And that’s exactly what I did.

This was loads of fun to work on, and I can’t wait to start working in the colours.

Stay tuned for more updates, and hop on over to our RocketHub Project Page to learn about how you can help support the production of the next issue of The Underground.
