Not just another cover!

The cover for The Underground “Bad Seeds” was the hardest one for me to come up with.  I’ve never had difficulty coming up with a cover design, but for whatever reason, I just couldn’t nail the impact that I was going for.  I wanted something special.  Something that would get people talking a bit, something that would make you want to show your friends, something that would encourage you to pick the book up off the shelf.  But then I remembered one of the judges’ comments from the Small Press Idol 2009.

“Making the leap into empathy in movies like A Bug’s Life and Antz is achieved by making them very ‘human’, cute, and loading the proceedings with humor adn pop culture references.”
-SAM

Pop culture references, eh?

There was the answer!  For this, and upcoming covers, we’ve decided to make visual parodies of some of the most iconic comic covers in history.  With a title like ‘Bad Seeds’, and with the extra attention paid to the evil Shock Troops, I had toyed around with the idea of making a wanted poster.  There’s only one iconic cover that fits the bill, when thinking of wanted posters…

The Unveiling!

While sitting at Hugin & Munin for Free Comic Book Day I looked at Dave and said, “Today I’m drawing The Bad Seeds Cover”.

And that’s exactly what I did.

This was loads of fun to work on, and I can’t wait to start working in the colours.
