Insect-O-Fact # 13 – The Fungus Mines of Coryn

Please enjoy Page 6 and the accompanying Insect O Fact.

The Fungus Mines of Coryn

In the early designs of Coryn, the landscape was speckled with various ‘smurfesque’ mushrooms, and flora. While I liked the idea of building on the terrain, and using it to the ants’ advantage, this did not seem to be the way to do it. And so many hours were spent sketching, and erasing, and scribbling, and writing, until finally while on a camping trip with friends the answer came.

We were walking through the woods when we came across some bright, and beautiful fungus growing on a fallen tree. It was a vivid orange in colour, and the shape seemed to flow from the tree, and within itself. As we continued our walk we saw more and more of this strange fungus, in some cases it seemed to be more prevalent than the tree it was growing from.

Upon returning to the campsite, I grabbed my sketchpad, and started work on what would become the concept design for the new Coryn. I used this fantastic fungus to create a unique look, and better still a backbone to the ant colony. As the twisted team would continue Coryn’s design and development, the fungus became an integral part of the hill ant community.

If you take a peak around the bio sections, and even Coryn’s introduction page, you’ll notice some new images.  I went digging through the archives and found a few pics to supplement the stellar write ups and such being completed by Chris and Dave.  So go ahead, and do some digging of your own, and let me know what other images you’d like to see.  Our gallery is about due for an update….

Page 6 concept and OLD Coryn concept

With today’s post I am also including our first villain bio – Kronus. Please enjoy!
Under the image for the Coryn concept I have included a quote from creator and artist Paul Reaume.

Page 6:

Here’s an old concept for Coryn that was abandoned. Paul’s thoughts on why it was abandoned are after the pic.

“The original design of Coryn is problematic for two reasons. The first being how obviously juvenile the design was; Looking back at it I don’t know whether I should be expecting Styx or Papa Smurf to emerge on the scene! Without a doubt I was younger, and in a different mindset when this key location was designed, all the same, it had to go. Secondly, much of Coryn’s structure was above ground….Last I checked the title of the book was ‘The Underground’. Someone had asked me that while taking part in the Small Press Idol 2009. “How can you call it The Underground, if you seem to be focusing yourself above ground?” Coryn is the first opportunity for me to set this straight, and it has opened a whole new realm of possibilities for the design of this and future locales.” – Paul Reaume
