And with that, Azulon is on the Fly’s side….need I say more? Yet another reason that we put such an emphasis on the developing the story today. There are so many opportunities here to expand on characters and their dynamics with one another. I think Chris has done a great job with page 8 especially when it comes to directly the tone of speech to best reflect each character’s mood, and reactions to one another.

With that the flies can rest easy. The queen’s on the job, Loxyn’s getting a scout, what else do you need? Looking back at this scene as a whole, I get the feeling like I was just pushing through these pages to get to something more fun to draw! I try to work closely now with the team to develop the story, and get the most out of every scene. Through that I’ve found the same enjoyment in drawing fierce battle scenes, as I find in scenes which require softer emotion, and character interpretation.

It’s funny how similar this panel is to the current ‘introduction panel’ for Cree. I really like the Admiral’s posture, I always have. He seems creepy, before he even starts speaking, and he carries with him that same aura as he enters the queen’s chambers. The only way I could improve on this impact was to add an entourage to accompany him. It also seems rather fitting that a political figure head be accompanied by his senior members of office, even insects follow some form of protocol and formalities.

Two panels. Two panels, is all I dedicated to Cree stating his case to the queen of Coryn. Hardly fitting of such a dire situation. This is just one example of why the projected length of this story arc is 9 issues, compared to the original arc which spanned 5 before moving onto the next arc. Today we’ve looked at this as an opportunity to build on Cree’s shifty nature, and give the Shock Troops a little more time in the spotlight.

I remember drawing this picture in particular and being so proud of how it had turned out. Now I look back at it, and a part of me wants to tear it apart. There are a couple of changes which are apparent in this panel alone. The most obvious being character designs. As we’ve discussed before, Azulon design has been changed to better resemble the real life physical state of many insect queens. Loxyn has also taken a less ‘heavy metal-evil’ look. Though, I still kept one spiked shoulder pad, perhaps for sentimental reasons. Secondly, the throne. I feel that this is an affront to the insect world we are creating, in that it draws too closely to an object from the land of the Man-beasts. I had to work harder to give this a very different feel than that of a throne room we are used to seeing, but still find some anchor point to make it familiar enough to build some sort of connection

One thing hasn’t changed over the years…Azulon does NOT trust the flies. What I really enjoyed in the current bio for the shifty Admiral Cree, is the explanation to some of Azulon’s doubts. For a queen who is reputed as being so honest, fair, and nurturing, it doesn’t seem right that she is so quick to dismiss a colony in need. By illustrating Cree’s previous deed of dishonesty, I find a greater resonance in Azulon’s reaction to his plea as he arrives in Coryn.
