Terseon Turbo Cannon

The Terseon Turbocannon or Terso-cannon is the product of Terseon chemical mastery coupled with the engineering brilliance of the Rhi. It is comprised of 2 main parts, the conversion chamber and reed barrel. The barrel of the cannon is a hollowed out reed connected at the base to the chamber. Around the circumference of the chamber are six loading ports, each designed to accommodate the firing nozzle of a Terseon Nasute loader. After each loader has fired, a chemical reaction occurs in the flexible chamber which causes it to swell. Due to the size of the mechanism, it is mounted on a large soldier termite which acts as its transportation platform, and is often chosen from the ranks of the Terseon Authothysis agents. Their chemical glands acting as a valuable last defense mechanism. Terseon soldiers are blind and as such an eighth termite, usually a Rhi officer is also also necessary for aiming and firing the device. The weapon is capable of firing at great range, decimating enemy formations, buildings, and even artillery with its highly pressurized acid spray.

Bombardier Cannon

The main artillery piece of Coryn’s Royal Army, the Bombardier Canon is operated by a rider who pulls a ‘clavicle lever’. This starts off the mechanishm which, through the workings of some gears and pulleys, pulls a hook pierced into the clavicle area of the beetle. A chief ‘herder’ positions himself at the head of the beast (which is shrouded to ensure the beast’s confusion, and response to the hook), and pushes a long pole with a fork at the end under the head of the beetle. By pushing the beetle’s head up, the tug of the hook is more uncomfortable. When the beast feels threatened it will release a volatile fluid from its abdomen. The ant rider ‘steers’ the abdomen in order to aim the burning blast. In hopes of better focusing the spray the ants will often fasten a cone to the bombardier’s abdomen.

Since its initial inception into Coryn’s army, many other colonies have utilized these massive artillery monsters in their own militaries. Some colonies have further adapted the original ‘pattern’ to better reflect their own unique needs. The Hive Embassy, as an example, has been reported to fasten an ignition device onto the abdomen cone in order to create a fiery spray.

Pulex Pulse Cannon

The mindset of most spiders is to build a defensive structure such as a web and wait for prey to come to you. When prey comes at you in force of numbers, a static defense such as that of a web structure is little help and the prey can easily outmatch said predator. Arachnid engineers needed a way to counter the massed infantry tactics of the static formations of Coryn and the swarming tactics and tremendous numbers of the Termite Union. The answer was the instant calamity caused by the Pulex Pulse Cannon.

The mechanism behind this innovative weapon is quite simple and easy to deploy against a charging army. The Pulse cannon consists of a large tube as the barrel connected to a straightforward firing pin that irritates the ammunition into action. The ammunition consists of starved, disease ridden, and really pissed off fleas. Once the trigger is engaged the pin creates just enough force to make the hungry flea leap out of it’s holding pen with incredulous speed and force.

The flea smashes through enemy lines creating confusion and then naturally begins to tear apart any bug in it’s vicinity in a ravenous feeding frenzy that creates even more chaos. The only drawback to this incredible piece of weapons engineering is that the rabid fleas tend to destroy everything in their paths including friendly forces. This is a truly frightening weapon of last resort regardless of who’s side you’re on.

The Termites are a species which I’ve vaguely touched upon twice in the history of The Underground. I’ve always had a liking for them, for some reason, just haven’t been able to find the right application.
The first time I tried to incorporate this fascinating species was in The Underground TOS (The Original Series) #3. I had used one of them on the Hive Embassy’s Council. I had originally planned to use him as a kind of psychic, magical type figure. Big head…big brain…psychic powers…it all made sense at the time. In the end I abolished the idea as I felt it was too supernatural for the book.

The second time I visited this species was in the unreleased The Underground TOS #7. This time around I showed the termite as a basic beast type character, being put to use by the ants. Until we really started looking at how diverse the species is, and their colonies can be, this seemed to be a natural fit.

In today’s Underground, Dave Rocha, has paved the road for a fascinating species which finally does justice to their real-world counterparts. If you haven’t already you should check out how this species has evolved yet again, in the pages of The Underground.

Come Explore the current Termite Union

Krevin

Congrats to Bryce, age 14 for winning our create-a-character contest.

Without further ado, KREVIN!

Species: Hercules Beetle
Height :11 mm
First Appearance : You’re lookin’ at it!

Krevin is the only surviving member of his clutch. Born a dwarf to a mother with little patience for such defects, he was cast into the wilderness alone. No notice was taken of his exceptionally acute intellect. It was his particularly keen senses, and instincts which served him so well in his early hours in the wilderness.

Even as a larvae, Krevin appeared to be a fanciful snack for a passing robin. Despite his best efforts to elude the flying predator, he was eventually caught be the beast. Unwilling to become the monstrous creature’s next meal, Krevin continued his fight. Surprisingly he managed to squirm free of his captor, and fell to the earth below. His heavily armoured carapace saved him from the fall, as he crashed into the middle of a silverfish den.

Darkness washed over him, and momentarily Krevin drifted out of consciousness. The sensation of squirming from below him woke the young beetle. Half expecting to be dead, he surveyed his surroundings with clear bewilderment. He was underground, of that much he could be sure. The dark and damp cavern walls were sporatically illuminated by glowing fungus. He was moving, but not by his own means. That squirming sensation was in fact a veritable carpet of Silverfish, they were escorting the beetle to the leader of their clan; the one they called ‘Zynsei’.

The Zynsei immediately recogninzed Krevin’s unharnessed intellect, and ordered that he be allowed to heal and later live amongst the Silverfish. In fact, the Zynsei took Krevin on as his personal pet, if not student. Communication with Krevin was exceptionally hard for the Silverfish, and so they mutually developed a form of sign language. It was not long before Krevin earned his welcome, and was accepted as a part of the Silverfish clan. While he has protected his clan on several occasions the dwarf Hercules Beetle cannot help but feel that there is still a greater cause waiting for him…somewhere…in The Underground.
