Ants form colonies that range in size from a few dozen predatory individuals living in small natural cavities to highly organised colonies which may occupy large territories and consist of millions of individuals.  Colonies consist mostly several job-oriented castes such as ‘workers’, ‘soldiers’ or other specialised groups. These extensive colonies also contain one or more fertile females known as Queens.  The colonies are sometimes described as superorganisms because ants appear to operate as a unified entity, collectively working together to support the colony.

Ant societies have division of labour, communication between individuals, and an ability to solve complex problems. These parallels with human societies have long been an inspiration and subject of study…

In the Underground, Ants are an intelligent and resourceful species.  While several colonies exist, the most notable is surely the Hill Ants of Coryn.  Their extensive colony has become a centralized hub of activity and trade within the Underground

Notable Ants

Queen Azulon :

Kind, noble, and magnanimous are the words to describe Azulon. She is virtuous, gracious and just in all of her pronouncements. She leads her kin spiritually along the moral and principled path. Admirers of the Queen know that although her power is ultimate, her heart is benevolent. Her authority reaches well beyond the walls of Coryn and affects the welfare of all of the Underground.

Loxyn :

Prince Loxyn is the epitome of a crown prince. Chosen by his mother as a larva, he was given to Thallyn as a special gift to her King. He was to continue his father’s legacy and as such was taught everything the King knew.  Thallyn’s murder has taught the young prince to expect the unexpected and be forever vigilant in the pursuit of Order.

Zealots Elite (Styx, Raymus, Lor, & Sarka) :

The Zealots Elite are the Queen’s indentured elite guard, and represent the highest ranking officers within Coryn’s army.  Each possesses a level of prowess in their individual discipline markedly higher than any other.  They are the most trusted and devoted of the Queen’s army.  They fulfill her orders, acting as ambassadors or fighting as soldiers.  They are highly respected and renowned throughout the whole of the Underground.

Styx: Selected as an egg to be the next Blademaster, Styx was trained by his predecessor and before long was the finest swordsman in Coryn. He is a gruff veteran of many battles giving him nerves of steel, and through necessity becoming determined and unwavering. Being a long time enemy of the Hive, Styx is forever on guard against those that would threaten Coryn.

Raymus: Warrior, pacifist, demolisher, and loyal protector of the innocent. As a member of the Eciton Rapax or New World Army Ant species, war, death and destruction were his birthright. Escaping the thrall of his Queen, he left his kin and joined the ants of Coryn. He now serves as the demolitions specialist of the “Zealot’s elite.

Lor: Mistaken as a hill ant pupae she was taken to Coryn by a Corynian soldier and raised as his own. As she grew it became apparent that she is a “Ruf”, a slave ant species genetically subservient to her birthmother, implanted in other colonies as sleeper agents. Rising to become Queen Azulon’s sharpshooter, one has to wonder what will happen if she is “activated”.

Sarka: Sarka is every-ants opposite. She goes left when others go right. Ants work together and Sarka works alone. Shunned, Sarka began to explore the world outside of Coryn, stealthily working her way into places none of her kind has ever gone. Styx noticed her potential and brought her before the Queen, who made her the official scout of The Elite.
