With the posting of Bad Seeds’ seventh page, comes our first glimpse at Queen Azulon’s new design, and her chambers. We’ve decided to use a Roman theme with Coryn, and I wanted to make sure to use certain key elements throughout the colony to emphasize this. Azulon’s chamber was a great opportunity to demonstrate some ant chamber paintings. The wall behind the ant queen shows a visual story of Coryn’s history dating back to the colony that Azulon was born into.
By keeping all of the details very basic, and colours flat, I was able to recreate some aspect of ancient Roman decorative painting. Both Romans and Greeks were famous for their fantastic pottery, and decorative elements all adorned with paintings. To paint a picture was not enough though, each piece had to tell a story. I found that this idea married very well to how we have structured the ant civilization, the importance of the lineage, and their focus on the colony.
Check out this archived Bug Blog. I wrote this back when I was originally designing the Queen’s chamber. It’s always nice to look back and see where my head was going at the time. Check it out, and let me know what you think.
