I remember drawing this picture in particular and being so proud of how it had turned out. Now I look back at it, and a part of me wants to tear it apart. There are a couple of changes which are apparent in this panel alone. The most obvious being character designs. As we’ve discussed before, Azulon design has been changed to better resemble the real life physical state of many insect queens. Loxyn has also taken a less ‘heavy metal-evil’ look. Though, I still kept one spiked shoulder pad, perhaps for sentimental reasons. Secondly, the throne. I feel that this is an affront to the insect world we are creating, in that it draws too closely to an object from the land of the Man-beasts. I had to work harder to give this a very different feel than that of a throne room we are used to seeing, but still find some anchor point to make it familiar enough to build some sort of connection
One thing hasn’t changed over the years…Azulon does NOT trust the flies. What I really enjoyed in the current bio for the shifty Admiral Cree, is the explanation to some of Azulon’s doubts. For a queen who is reputed as being so honest, fair, and nurturing, it doesn’t seem right that she is so quick to dismiss a colony in need. By illustrating Cree’s previous deed of dishonesty, I find a greater resonance in Azulon’s reaction to his plea as he arrives in Coryn.
