The Red Haired Man was a remnant from the fur trading days and even his contemporaries considered him to be more “Indian” than European. The Americans even considered him a “savage”.

Originally from Scotland, he made a life for himself as a fur trader. Mascotapah was even adopted by the Sioux whose name in their language means “Red-Haired-Man”

Little was known of Mascotapah among the whites other than he was fiercely anti-American and once hostilities opened he would lead the tribes of the west. Brock and Tecumseh both independently tried to recruit him before the war. When the Sioux and other western tribes joined Tecumseh’s Confederacy in 1811, his place in the war was guaranteed. Once the war started, his deeds cemented his place in history!
